Endangered baby tree kangaroo pops out of mom’s pouch in time for Mother’s Day

MIAMI, Fla. (NBC)— An endangered tree kangaroo at a zoo in Florida showed off her adorable baby today, just in time for Mother’s Day weekend!

This Matschie’s tree kangaroo at Zoo Miami revealed her joey Friday, which curiously peeked out into the world.

The joey was born in October of last year, and will continue to develop inside its mother’s pouch for the next several months.

The mom, Zayna, is 9 years old and dad, Banyon, is almost 11.

The joey will eventually become part of an international captive breeding program, in an effort to conserve the endangered species.

Matschie’s tree kangaroos live at high elevations in the Huon peninsula of Papau New Guinea and spend most of their time up in the trees.
