There are now two new eaglets in Southwest Florida – E12 and E13!
Harriet and M15, the two bald eagles featured in the highly-popular Southwest Florida Eagle Cam, welcomed their first new eaglet to the nest on Sunday. The second eaglet hatched overnight on Christmas Eve.
Harriet laid two eggs back in November.
On Sunday, it was apparent that one of them was getting close to hatching.
The first pip was seen in the egg on Saturday. By Sunday, pieces of shell started falling off, making it look like the egg was ready to break in half. The camera also zoomed in to show movement inside the egg.
Around 10:50 a.m., the shell mostly broke in half and the eaglet’s head popped out. The eaglet remained nestled in its shell as Harriet sat back down to continue incubating.
The Southwest Florida Eagle Cam website says E12 officially hatched at 11:26 a.m.
The second egg hatched sometime either late Christmas Eve night or early Christmas morning. The Southwest Florida Eagle Cam doesn’t have an exact hatch time yet for E13.
According to Southwest Florida Eagle Cam, the process of hatching can take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours.
You can follow all the action on the official SWFL Eagle Cam website, the official Facebook page, Twitter feed, Instagram account, Tumblr page and YouTube channel. News Channel 8 will also be keeping a close eye on the eggs on the WFLA Facebook page.
