LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 5-year-old girl has died and a 7-year-old boy is in critical condition after a sand hole collapsed on them at a Florida beach, NBC Miami reported.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the children were digging a hole in the sand when it collapsed on them, trapping them both.

A witness recorded cell phone video showing beachgoers frantically digging into the sand, attempting to rescue the children, NBC Miami reported.

Aerial video taken by the news station showed first responders surrounding the sand hole, which was marked off with caution tape.

Paramedics rushed the two children to an area hospital. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the girl had died, and the boy was still listed in critical condition.

The children have not been identified as of this writing.
