Florida police warn of dangerous drug Flakka, causes superhuman strength

Police and doctors across Florida are warning the public about the dangers of a new synthetic drug called Flakka.

The warning comes after a man on the drug tried to break into a police department by any means necessary.

Surveillance cameras were rolling outside the Fort Lauderdale Police Department in March when police say James West violently and with every ounce of strength in his body, tried to get inside.

Surveillance video shows West pulling and kicking to get in. Then, when the doors won’t open, he throws a large rock, not once but twice, to crack the hurricane-proof glass.

Investigators say West admitted to being on the synthetic drug Flakka when he broke the door .

“Superhuman strength, how hard he’s pulling at the door,” said Dr. Nabil El Sanadi.

El Sanadi is an emergency room doctor at Broward Health. He watched the surveillance video and said he was not surprised to hear that west told police he was using Flakka.

El Sanadi said Flakka, which is a bath salt, is extremely dangerous.RELATED: Largo Police concerned about party drug “Molly”

“They’re hallucinating. They’re on a psychotic state, they may have superhuman strength,” he said.

Investigators say West told them he was being chased by more than two dozen cars and he ran to the police department for help.

After this episode, West was locked up for criminal mischief.

Doctors and detectives say they’re seeing more and more people using Flakka.

“Our agency is very aware of the increase of Flakka, said Detective Tracy Figone, who is with the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department.

One of the concerns for law enforcement is the superhuman strength aspect of the drug.

Sergeant Ted Taranu said the Broward County Sheriff’s Office is also seeing more of it. He spoke specifically about the danger to deputies and officers.

“If you come across somebody high on drugs, and it’s a super strength drug and they have super strength and you try to detain them, talk to them and they get violent, it could be a bad situation,” said Taranu.

Fort Lauderdale Police say the video reveals what Flakka can do. They want to make sure the public knows of the dangers.
