NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WFLA) – Two new wildfires broke out in Pasco County on Wednesday, proving just how serious the fire danger has become.
WFLA Helicopter Eagle 8 discovered a second new wildfire while on the way to cover another fire in Pasco County. The second new fire is located in Hudson near New York Avenue and US 19. Large flames could be seen shooting from treetops. Embers from the fire caused the blaze to spread nearby.
Florida Forest Service is calling this fire “South Wind.” The fire burned about 18 acres. The fire is now 100 percent contained, as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Crews are improving control lines and mopping up.
A shed, boat and an 18-wheel trailer were damaged.
No homes are currently threatened. No evacuation orders were issued.
Four dozer plow units and a helicopter are on scene. Two Forest Service supervisors and Pasco Fire Rescue are on scene as well.
The wildfire sent big clouds of black smoke over the area.
This second new fire was discovered by Eagle 8 around 2:55 p.m., a few hours after a park in New Port Richey was evacuated because of a new wildfire burning in the area. The new 5-10 acre wildfire is burning near the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
The park was evacuated and is closed until further notice. The evacuation includes all bike trails, campers, and day users.
The Suncoast Bike Trail from SR 52 to SR 54 and the trails going into Starkey Park are also closed until further notice.
Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park is located at 10500 Wilderness Park Road in New Port Richey.
Firefighters are also battling two other wildfires in Pasco County. The Campground Fire burned 75 acres and is 100 percent contained. The official cause has been ruled a lightning strike.
The Silver Palms fire continues to burn 35 acres and is 60 percent contained. Fire and forest officials say they’re having a hard time getting equipment into the area to fight the flames because of the swampy ground. The official cause of the fire has been ruled a lightning strike as well.
On Wednesday morning, county commissioners approved a burn ban in Pasco County due to the continued wildfire danger.
All Pasco County schools remain open, but students on some bus routes are being kept at school until their parents pick them up.
