A family’s pet is being hailed a hero after saving an infant during a fire.
Erika Poremski says she stepped outside to get something from her car when her home was quickly engulfed in flames. She says she’s tried to rescue her 8-month-old daughter, but the heavy smoke made it difficult.
When firefighters arrived and rescued the infant from her second-floor bedroom, they found the family’s dog, Polo, laying on top of the girl, covering her with his entire body.
Paramedics were able to revive the little girl, but Polo did not survive.
Poremski says she’s heartbroken.
“I just keep praying that he’s still just watching and he’s OK, and I just feel bad. I just keep imagining what they were going through, and I couldn’t get up there to get them, and it’s just the worse feeling. But then, knowing he was there with her, maybe she wasn’t as scared when I heard her, and he stayed with her the whole time. He could’ve ran downstairs and he didn’t,” she said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The little girl was in serious condition and will be monitored day-to-day.
