(WFLA) – Facebook turned on its “Safety Check” feature after an explosion in Lahore, Pakistan killed at least 60 and wounded 300, but the messages went to people both near and far away from the scene of the blast.
The explosion took place at a park on Easter Sunday. A breakaway faction of the militant Taliban group in Pakistan took responsibility for the deadly blast. According to the Associated Press, a suicide bomber deliberately targetted a Christian community.RELATED: Taliban faction claims Pakistan park bombing
Facebook turned on the safety feature after the blast to help out people in the area to locate their friends and family. But soon it was clear that the messages went to people too far away from it. According to Twitter, people in the US and the UK received those safety checkers.
NBC affiliate WKYC reported that Facebook representatives issued a statement to Gawker saying that they are aware that the messaging safety feature was improperly sent. They didn’t specify what had caused it.
