BERKELEY, SC (WFLA)- Federal officials say an F-16 fighter jet and a small plane have collided in midair in South Carolina.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement Tuesday that the fighter jet collided with a Cessna C150 around 11 a.m. The collision happened about 11 miles north of Charleston.

WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC is reporting that a pilot ejected from the F-16. The crash scene is at Lewisfield Plantation which is located in Moncks Corner, north of Charleston. A witness called WCBD-TV and said he saw two planes collide in the air and saw a huge explosion, describing it as a “ball of fire in the air.”

An unnamed source told WCBD-TV that an F-16 and a small plane were involved in the crash. “SConFire” which is a fire department in the area, tweeted that there was an aircraft crash that was reported as a plane collision. No other details have been released.
