A family that was forced to evacuate during a raging wildfire in California returned home to a heartwarming surprise this week.
The Carr Fire that has been burning in southern California for about two weeks now has forced thousands of families out of their homes.
California firefighters say one of the families that had to evacuate had a pet fish named Grant that they had to leave behind. During the evacuation, the father explained to his daughter that Grant the fish would most likely be dead by the time they got home.
But when the family returned, they found Grant alive and well-fed.
A note left next to his bowl by California Fire Engine 1489 read, “Fed your fish a few sprinkles. Sorry if we weren’t supposed to.”
Corning police officers added to the note on Aug. 1.
“Fed your fish on 8-1-2018 @ 10:33 a.m.,” they wrote. “Good luck.”
The official CAL FIRE Twitter account shared a picture of the note and of Grant the fish on Saturday. Thousands have retweeted and liked the post. Dozens more are commending the emergency crews for taking the time to feed the fish during such a dangerous situation.
As of Sunday, the Carr Fire has burned 191,211 acres and is 59 percent contained.
