PLANT CITY, Fla. (WFLA) – A 78-year-old Plant City woman died Monday from injuries she suffered in an early morning house fire on Bond Street.

Virginia M. Carpenter was transported to South Florida Baptist Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Investigators believe she died from smoke inhalation, but an autopsy will be performed to determine an exact cause of death.

According to a Plant City Police Department report, emergency crews were dispatched to the residence at 1814 Bond St. just after midnight. Upon arrival firefighters were informed the structure was possibly occupied by an elderly female.

Firefighters found Carpenter unresponsive inside the home. She was removed from the residence as paramedics with Plant City Fire Rescue conducted life saving measures.
