TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — If you plan on driving this morning, beware. More fog is expected to develop in the Tampa Bay area overnight Tuesday and last into Wednesday morning.  A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued until 11 a.m. for areas along the coast.

The fog was so dense on Tuesday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol closed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The bridge remained closed until 12:45 p.m., when the fog had cleared enough for drivers to safely use the bridge.

Sea fog moved inland during the night hours and creates hazardous traveling conditions for the morning commute on Wednesday.

Due to light winds and slightly cooler temperatures, the fog is expected to make it much farther inland than it did Tuesday morning. For the Wednesday morning commute fog could be an issue for many of the local highways (I-275, I-75, I-4, etc).

So, what is causing this “pea soup”?  It is simply warm moist air from the south blowing over a relatively cool Gulf of Mexico.  The air condenses, much as it does along the side of a cold glass of water.  The condensation that forms is basically a cloud on the ground .

The fog will also reduce sunlight for coastal areas on Wednesday resulting in a big spread in temperatures. Inland locations (Sebring, Bartow, etc) will be around 90 degrees, while the immediate coast could top off in the middle 80s. Get your complete Storm Team 8 weather coverage here.

Spotty sea fog will return Thursday morning. A change in wind directions will result in better visibility and less fog as we move into the weekend.

The dense fog could end up closing the Sunshine Skyway Bridge overnight and for the morning commute. Drivers might want to have a backup plan and give themselves extra time to get to their destinations.
