SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) – A diver accidentally shot and injured his friend while spear-fishing, according to Sarasota Police.

It happened near the Sarasota Yacht Club at about 2 p.m.

SPD officers said, that the two divers, Dale H. Bartush, 24, and his friend Jarrod G. Ditmars, 21, were spear-fishing near the Twin Bridge, when Bartush’s gun went off by accident. The arrow hit Ditmars in the head. Bartush took him up to the surface and started calling for help.

Ditmars was taken to a hospital in very serious condition. He is in the intensive care unit with life-threatening injuries. Sarasota Police officers said no charges are expected in this case.

Westbound John Ringling Causeway was closed after the incident. SPD reopened the lanes later in the afternoon. Stay with WFLA for more on this developing story.
