COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — At least 10 people were shot Saturday at a shopping mall in South Carolina’s capital, according to local authorities.
The Columbia Police Department said 12 people were injured in total at the Columbiana Centre mall, including two people who were injured during a stampede. The victims ranged in age from 15 to 73-years-old. No deaths were reported.
At least two people who suffered gunshot wounds were listed in “critical but stable” condition.
Authorities said shoppers were evacuated from the mall while officers swept the building for additional threats.
Three “people of interest” were detained following the incident.
“What we know is at least three people were seen with firearms inside the mall. At least one person fired a weapon,” Columbia Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook said. “That could change.”
Authorities said they believe the shooting was not a random act.
Video from inside the mall showed paramedics tending to at least two victims. Swatches of blood could be seen resting on the floor as shoppers were escorted out of the mall.
