Crews contain North Port brush fire

NORTH PORT, Fla. (WFLA) – Fire crews are working to contain a fire at the Deer Prairie Preserve in North Port Thursday evening.

The fire is 10 acres, according to the Florida Department of Forestry’s Patrick Mahoney.

Mahoney confirmed the fire is 95% contained.

Levi Barlow with the Florida Forestry service said the wind made the fire difficult to fight.

“With all the high winds, it fanned the fire really fast,” Barlow said.  “We were pretty much on edge the entire time we were here.”

Several homes were voluntary evacuated.

“There was just this wall of fog like a horror movie just coming at you.  You couldn’t see the house over there any more,” said Richard Miller.

“They gradually kept moving us further back and further back, because the fire kept getting bigger and that was worrisome, and then about a half hour into it, it looked like they were getting this contained, and then all of a sudden there’s a fire over there out of nowhere.”

“You’re scared and you’re thinking what I should do?” said Bridgette Grassmann, who was also evacuated.  “What’s most important and they’re saying get out of your house … Get your animals.”WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON-
