Clinton could announce VP running mate during Florida visit

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — On the heels of the Republican National Convention, Hillary Clinton is expected to dominate headlines as she makes her vice presidential pick. Clinton will be making appearances in Florida at the time her announcement is expected.

“I can tell you the process will be a lot cleaner and more professional than what we saw on the Republican side,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

“Certainly this is the biggest media market in the state, it would make a lot of sense that she do it here but you know Miami and Orlando are also on the schedule,” said Buckhorn.

Clinton’s schedule includes a stop in Orlando on Friday before appearing at the Florida State Fairgrounds at 4:30 on Friday afternoon. Clinton will appear in Miami on Saturday.

And who Clinton picks is just as important as where she is making the speech.

“The conventional wisdom is certainly that Tim Kaine is at the top of that pile, but every day the speculation changes,” said Mayor Buckhorn.

Patrick Manteiga is the editor of the trilingual newspaper ‘La Gaceta.’ He thinks Julian Castro or Senator Cory Booker would serve Clinton well as a running mate.

“Especially if it turns out to be a Latin, doing that in Tampa or Orlando with their Hispanic populations and then going to Miami the following day, certainly would be a way of having a lot of excitement if she picks a Latino as a running mate,” said Manteiga.

“She doesn’t need help in the percentage of the vote she gets. What she’s going to need help in is getting turnout. Will just the rhetoric from Trump turn out Latins or blacks or will they need something else? Will they need somebody on the ticket that they better identify with than just Hillary?” added Manteiga.
