TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – City officials showed up in full force. Dozens of code inspectors, the Tampa Fire Marshal’s Office and attorneys arrived, all to inspect West Tampa’s French Quarter Apartments.

This is after our 8 On Your Side investigation exposed a massive 100-foot void underneath the center building. The soil is so unstable that engineers who first found it say it’s among the worst they’ve ever seen.RELATED: Demolition team to inspect Tampa apartment complex with sinkhole activity

The property owner, a company run by Naples businessman Ron Glas, closed up the building with the troubling void shortly after learning of trouble in 2008. But the sinkhole activity was not fixed, and the landlord continues to collect rent from tenants just feet away, even after engineers warned that other buildings could be in danger, too.

City officials, though, say they were not informed of any of this until 8 On Your Side gave them the report. We were there today when officials got their first glimpse inside the vacated building.

An engineer working on behalf of the city determined nearby buildings do not need to be evacuated but he wants to see updated testing, including drilling beneath the vacated building, to determine if the voids have gotten deeper.RELATED: 8 On Your Side discovers major sinkhole activity near Tampa school

“It seems to be all limited to the first section of this building, where it slopes,” said Sal Ruggiero, the code enforcement director.

No one disputes the massive hole under the center building at 6411 N. Armenia Ave. In fact, the property owner is fighting Citizens Insurance in court, arguing the problem is so bad he needs more money to stabilize the ground.

City officials are tired of waiting. They want this fixed and they want confirmation that residents are safe.RELATED: Tampa official pushes for evacuation at apartments with sinkhole activityREAD MORE FROM 8 ON YOUR SIDE:
