TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A suspect in the gruesome stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students was arrested Friday, according to Idaho law enforcement.
Jail records showed Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was arrested in Monroe County in northeastern Pennsylvania and is being held for extradition to Idaho, where he faces a first-degree murder charge, according to the Associated Press.
The arrest comes more than six weeks after the four students — Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21 — were found were stabbed to death inside a rental house near campus in a case that shook the small farming community.
“These murders have shaken our community and no arrest will ever bring back these students,” said Moscow Police Chief James Fry.
Police were generally tight-lipped during a Friday afternoon news conference, releasing few details about the killings. Authorities repeatedly said the killings were targeted, but offered no motive, and said no weapons or vehicles were recovered.
On Dec. 7, police asked the public for help finding a white sedan seen near the crime scene around the time of the killings, saying the driver could have “critical information” about the case.
“This is not the end of this investigation. In fact, this is a new beginning,” Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said. “You all now know the name of the person who’s been charged with these offenses. Please get that information out there. Please ask the public anyone who knows anything about this individual to come forward.”
“Report anything you know about him to help the investigators and the court system to understand fully everything there is to know about not only the individual but what happened and why,” Thompson added.
