Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide deputies are investigating a crash that killed a 4-year-old boy early Saturday morning.
The PCSO received a report of a traffic crash around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 27 and Polo Park Boulevard in Davenport.
A white Toyota was stopped at a traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 27 and Polo Park Blvd. A white freightliner box truck was traveling south on Highway 27. The truck driver tried to stop using the emergency brakes but was unable to avoid the impact and rear-ended the Toyota.
The impact caused the back of the Toyota to be forced up to and into the back seat where two children were seated. One of the children, a 4-year-old boy, died. The second child, a young girl, was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando in critical condition. The driver of the Toyota, the children’s father, has been transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center; he is in serious condition. The driver of the truck has been transported to a Lake County hospital with minor injuries.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area as deputies are actively investigating.
