TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) –– A body found in Old Tampa Bay on Sunday morning is believed to be that of a swimmer who disappeared on Saturday afternoon.
Tampa police said the body has not yet been identified.
Robert Lucas, 35, was last seen swimming by himself, about 10 yards away from the shore at Cypress Point Park on Saturday.
911 dispatchers received a call around 2:48 p.m. on Saturday about a man in his mid-thirties who went under water and did not resurface.
Lucas was at the park with family and friends at Cypress Point Park, which is located at 5620 W. Cypress St. The park is near the Howard Frankland Bridge.
Family members told authorities that Lucas knew how to swim.
At 9:40 a.m. on Sunday the TPD Marine Patrol spotted a body in about 10 feet of water, roughly 50 feet from where Lucas was last seen. The body has been recovered and Lucas’ family members have been notified.
TPD is working with the Medical Examiner to determine the identity and cause of death, though it appears that the body is Lucas and that he drowned.
