TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Protesters started marching through downtown Tampa around 7 p.m. Monday during the Black Lives Matter rally.
The rally participants stopped at the intersection of Ashley Drive and Tyler Street. They stood in a large circle singing. The rally ended peacefully about two hours later.
Tensions are still at a boiling point over two fatal officer-involved shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana. Over the weekend, hundreds staged protests across the nation and on Monday night, members of Tampa’s Black Lives Matter movement are set to rally in downtown Tampa.
Calling for “justice, not violence,” the protest is being sponsored by Black Lives Matter Tampa, Tampa for Justice, Fight for 15 Florida and the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign.
It is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Lykes Gaslight Park, located at 410 N. Franklin Street. There is a Facebook page with more information on Monday’s event.
Hundreds of people from the Black Lives Matter movement gathered at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Tampa Friday night, as well, calling for open communication and dialogue.
