HAVERFORDWEST, Pembrokeshire, Wales (WCMH)-Thousands of bees descended on a Welsh woman’s car on Sunday, in an apparent effort to find their missing queen.

A Welsh woman named Carol Howarth had been to a nature preserve earlier in the day, and stopped in West Wales to do some shopping.

Thousands of the insects followed Howarth’s Mitsubishi Outlander to the shopping center and covered the car’s trunk while she was away. A local parks ranger, Tom Moses, stopped and took some footage of the out-of-the-ordinary sight.

He and several others say it’s likely that the queen bee was somehow trapped inside Howarth’s car, and the bees loyal to her came buzzing along to find her.

“I was a little bit concerned, with it being in the middle of town outside a pub, that someone might do something stupid and get hurt or do something stupid and hurt the bees,” he said to The Telegraph.

Moses wrote on Facebook that he called several local beekeepers in an effort to relocate the swarm. An estimated 20,000 of them had to be captured and put away in a cardboard box-it took several attempts and three beekeepers to get the situation handled.

Moses estimates he was stung about five times, but not as many times as the “drunk bloke from (the) pub” who swept the bees off the car with his hand in an effort to look for the queen, and “got stung loads.”

That’s where his part of the story ends, but it wasn’t the end for Carol Howarth, her SUV, and the bees.

According to The Telegraph, Howarth went back home. The next morning, the bees were back-or perhaps it was another swarm, as beekeeper Roger Burns theorized to CBC Radio in Canada.

The beekeepers came back and cleared the car off yet again.

“One theory was that the queen was trapped in my car and the swarm were following,” she said to the Telegraph, “But they couldn’t find the queen anywhere so I’ve no idea if that was right.

“Apparently bees can swarm at this time of the year and it is a very strong instinct for them to follow the queen.”
