Australians set a world record to claim gold over the U.S. in the 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of three minutes, 30.65 seconds. Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell and 100m freestyle world record holder Cate Campbell topped the American quartet of Simone Manuel, Abbey Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer and Katie Ledecky, who raced to 3:31.89.
At the 2012 London Olympics, the 4x100m freestyle relay was the Australian swim team’s only gold medal.
Ledecky, who anchored the relay in the preliminary heat on Saturday morning, was the only holdover from the morning relay. Vollmer also swam the 100m butterfly semifinal earlier Saturday evening to advance to Sunday’s final.
Canada’s squad claimed the bronze with a time of 3:32.89.
