With the help of its many volunteers, Feeding Tampa Bay is on a mission to to make sure more than 700,000 people in the bay area don’t go hungry.
“We get over 20,000 volunteers a year and they save us over a million dollars in labor a year, so they are a huge part of our mission,” said Marketing Communications Coordinator Taryn DeClue.
Friday was News Channel 8’s Founder’s Day, which means everyone from anchors, reporters, photographers and producers spent the day volunteering at Feeding Tampa Bay.
In total, News Channel 8 prepared a total of 17,871 meals!
The morning team prepared 9,146 meals. The evening team prepared 8,725.
On average, Feeding Tampa Bay can distribute as many as 3.5 million meals a month, but they need a full staff of volunteers to make that happen.
“We can use between 75-100 volunteers every single day. We are accepting volunteers Tuesday-Saturday. We have two shifts, one in the morning from 9-12 and one in the afternoon from 1-4,” DeClue said.
To become a volunteer, all you have to do is go online and sign up.
“You can go to feedingtampabay.org/volunteer and that lists all of our shifts as well as where you can sign up. We also have a family night where we accept children of all ages in the warehouse. So they can come in and learn about our mission and learn about hunger in our area,” DeClue said.
Florida is fourth in the nation for family hunger, this is a statistic Feeding Tampa Bay is trying to eliminate one volunteer at a time.
