(WFLA/KTVT) – An experimental vaccine for Alzheimer’s disease is reportedly showing promising results.
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center are testing the vaccine on mice, monkeys and rabbits.
Last week, they reported it safety prevented the buildup of two proteins.
Those proteins are associated with the degenerative brain disease.
Researchers hope to one day test the vaccine out on humans.
They say it could extend lives by preventing Alzheimer’s from developing.
One professor suggested it could even cut the number of dementia cases by half.
According to the University of Texas, more than five and a half million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease.
The number could double by 2050.
