WANDERING RIVER, Alberta (AP) – The area just south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, has been getting a little rain today, and more could be on the way. But Canadian officials say a whole lot more rainfall will be needed to slow the huge wildfire that has scorched hundreds of thousands of acres and wiped out entire neighborhoods. They say the fire could continue to burn for months.
More than 80,000 people have fled their homes in Fort McMurray, where the fire has torched 1,600 homes and other buildings.
The Alberta government says the blaze will soon cover more than 495,000 acres and continue to grow because of high temperatures, dry conditions and high winds. Chad Morrison of Alberta Wildfire said it’s not uncommon to fight such an inferno in forested areas for months.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
