TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)—With Hurricane Matthew on the horizon, airports across the southeast portion of the country are bracing for the worst.

The State Department has issued warnings and alerts to U.S. citizens traveling to eastern Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and the Bahamas due to Hurricane Matthew.

Several airlines in the U.S. are also waiving change fees for those traveling to and from destinations in Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina that could be impacted by the storm.

In Tampa, airport officials urge passengers to be aware that delays and/or cancellations are possible in the coming days.

“The best travelers can do is to check their flight status prior to their flight,” said Tampa International Airport spokesman Danny Valentine.

Valentine also added that the Airport is carefully monitoring the storm to stay as prepared as possible.
