Airbus is working on a plan to make flights more comfortable for passengers of all sizes.
According to a US Patent filing, the airplane manufacturer is looking into what its called a “Re-Configurable Passenger Bench Seat.” Instead of individual seats like you find on current planes, the benches would be closer to what you find on a subway or train.

The patent filing says there are several different ways to configure the benches. One would allow three adult passengers to site side by side. A second layout would allow two large passengers to sit comfortably with an arm rest between them. A third would accommodate a family of two adults and two children.
Airbus says the design can be adapted “to the requirements of specific groups, including senior citizens, overweight passengers, and those with restricted mobility.”
