PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (WFLA) – A 36-year-old St. Petersburg man was killed and five others were hurt after a car slammed into a tree in a horrific crash along Park Boulevard in Pinellas Park.

Police said two cars were speeding when one sideswiped the other causing a 15-year-old driver to lose control of her Mazda 3 and hit the tree in the 6300 block of Park Boulevard after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Glenis Mullins III was killed. The teen driver was not identified. The passengers were Mullins’ 15-year-old son, Justice, along with Bryce Walker, 18, of Largo; Rebecca Costin, 15, of St. Petersburg; and Edwjin Clderson, 16, of Clearwater. The other passengers were taken to the hospital but the injuries were not life threatening.

Investigators said a vehicle pulled onto Park Boulevard from 62 Way North causing one of the speeding cars to change lanes. Police said that vehicle was not at fault.

Surveillance video obtained from a nearby business showed the Mazda hit the tree with such force that it shook the tree and demolished the car. The car’s engine was tossed 25 feet into a nearby parking lot.

None of the parties in in the speeding cars knew each other and investigators said it appears to be a random event that took place between them.

It’s unclear if alcohol was a factor; that remains under investigation.

Natasha Francis, an eyewitness, said she ran to one of the vehicles after the crash to help the people inside.  The noise of the crash startled her.

“I heard a loud thud. And I felt my apartment shake,” she said.
