HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Hernando County deputies investigated the discovery of what is thought to be a “very old Mark 65 bomb” and determined it was inert.

According to the sheriff’s office, the possible WWII-era bomb was found Tuesday at Helicopter Drive near Flight Path Driver in the Airport Industrial Park near American Aviation and is being assessed.

All roadways in the area that were closed have since reopened, according to deputies.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis announced the bomb was unearthed by a construction company on the site of the future Simpson Technical College campus in Brooksville.

A team from MacDill Air Force Base will help dispose of the ordnance.

According to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the M65 bomb is a 1,000-pound general-purpose bomb that was typically used against reinforced targets like dams and concrete or steel railroad bridges.

The Citrus County bomb squad also responded.
