TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist officially named his new running mate for lieutenant governor during a campaign event Saturday.

Crist won the primary elections Tuesday, securing his place as the Democratic nominee for Florida governor.

During his Saturday event, Crist announced that he selected Karla Hernandez-Mats, president of the United Teachers of Dade, to be his pick for lieutenant governor.

While in her position in the teachers union, Hernandez-Mats opposed the Parental Rights in Education Bill, known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by opponents. She also pushed for delaying school reopenings in 2020 and mask mandates for classrooms in 2021, defying the anti-mask mandate policies of the DeSantis administration.
