Researchers believe music can spark positive brain function, lower agitation, and improve mood in people with dementia. Recently, a donor approached the Alzheimer Association’s Florida Gulf Chapter with a proposal and funding to create a program called “Timeless Tunes.” Through it, 20,000 digital music players, loaded with hundreds of songs spanning 12 genres of music, and headphones are made available to people with dementia. The program currently serves all 17 counties in the Tampa Bay area, with volunteers delivering mass quantities of the players to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Individuals interested in acquiring Timeless Tunes for a loved one can call 1-800-272-3900 and arrange to pick up the devices.
