‘Historic day’: Pence announces phase 3 of COVID-19 vaccine trial

MIAMI (WFLA) — Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis were together in South Florida Monday announcing phase three of a COVID-19 vaccine trial.

Phase one of Moderna’s trial vaccine began back in March. Pence said the vaccine phase progress has been done in “record time.”

“I want to say thank you to all the Americans who are taking part in this phase three clinical trial,” Pence said. “We look forward to the results.”

The vice president said 89 sites across the country will begin administering the trial vaccine to 30,000 participants.

Monday’s press conference was held at the University of Miami, which will start its trial of the vaccine in “just a few days,” Pence said.

The vice president called the phase three milestone a “historic day.”

“We’re not waiting to create the vaccine until it’s finally approved with both Moderna and Pfizer and other companies,” Pence said. “We’re actually having them create the vaccine now to have it ready at the point of which we achieve the final approval from the FDA, that any vaccine will be safe to deploy to the American people.”
