US Department of Transportation releases new rules regarding service animals on flights

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The US Department of Transportation issued Thursday a Final Statement of Enforcement Priorities Regarding Service Animals to help provide clarity to airlines and passengers with service animals.

The department announced “it does not intend to take action against an airline for asking users of any type of service animal to provide documentation related to vaccination, training, or behavior so long as it is reasonable to believe that the documentation would assist the airline in making a determination as to whether an animal poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others.”

As part of this, the DOT will also monitor airlines’ animal documentation requirements to ensure that they are reasonable.
