A convicted cop killer was in court Thursday for the sentencing phase in the shooting death of Tarpon Springs Officer Charlie Kondek.

Marco Parilla shot and killed Officer Kondek in 2014.

He plead guilty in Oct. 2017.

Jurors heard opening statements from attorneys on both sides.

“Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang,” said prosecutor Jim Hellickson.

More than a dozen witnesses also gave testimony Thursday.

Prosecutors played dramatic dash cam video.

It showed Tarpon Springs police officers pursuing Parilla on the night of Dec. 21, 2014.

Officer Kondek was shot and killed while responding to a noise complaint.

“Gun shots fired,” said one of the officers on the video. “Officer down here.”

Officer John Gibson found Kondek on the ground.

In the recording, you hear Gibson trying to save his life.

“Stay with me Charlie. Stay with me.”

Officer Gibson told jurors he started CPR shortly after Kondek was shot.

“It’s burned in my head,” he said. “He was looking right at me like he wanted to say something and he just couldn’t. Tears welled up in his eyes and run down his face.”

Parilla said he didn’t do it while he sat in the back of the cop car. He also mentioned to another officer there was another man shooting.

It was all too emotional for family and friends to see and hear.

“Seven shots, that man took at Officer Kondek,” said Hellickson.

Parilla’s defense read a poem he wrote in jail, saying he was sorry.

“He has accepted responsibility and he is extremely remorseful,” said attorney Amanda Sellers.

Court resumes Friday at 10 a.m.
