From now until Thursday, you’ll see hundreds of signs along the road on Fowler Avenue between Bruce B Downs Bouelvard and Leroy Collins Boulevard, 545 of them to be exact.

There is one sign for every Floridian killed in a motorcycle crash in 2016.

May is “Share the Road” month. It’s a safety campaign from USF’s Center for Urban Transportation Research which is working to bring awareness to motorcycle deaths and to get drivers to share the road with motorcycles.

In fact, it’s one of only a few transportation research centers in the country to have a dedicated team examining motorcycle safety issues.

In 2016, bikers accounted for about 17 percent of all traffic deaths in Florida. 

For the past three years, the state has had the highest number of motorcycle fatalities in the country.

There are several other ways to help spread awareness and learn about motorcycle safety both as a biker and as a driver.
