A wastewater overflow has forced the City of Tampa to temporarily close the dog beach and seaplane basin on Davis Islands.

On Sunday afternoon, the city’s Wastewater Department says it was notified of a leaking force main near the Davis Islands Pump Station on Suwanee Circle.

The department says the mainline discharged 7,200 gallons of wastewater into the canal nearby. That wastewater then discharged into the Davis Island Seaplane Basin and Dog Beach.

City officials tell us the overflow has been contained. Crews are now collecting water samples to determine the levels of bacteria in the water.

The city has posted warning signs in the area restricting swimming, wading or fishing in the water until the tests are complete.
