“This is why I do the job.” A Chattanooga, Tennessee, fire captain posted to Facebook Monday.
Capt. Chris Blazek wanted to share his story to remind firefighters what doing this job is all about.
He said Engine 6 was dispatched to a car crash last week on Highway 58 in Chattanooga. It involved a pregnant mother and her three small children. The mother was hysterical because she was having abdominal and back pain.
“The children ranged in age from 7 years to 4 months. Both big girls were fine, but the baby was screaming hysterically too,” Blazek posted.
He picked up the baby and made sure she was OK. She then put her head on his shoulder.
“Shortly after that I decided that my guys had the scene under control, so I decided to sit and take a break with my new friend. She immediately fell asleep in my arms.”
The mother was taken to the hospital and Blazek said that Engine 6 personnel stayed at the scene with the children until family members arrived.
“It’s moments like this, that I am reminded, this is why I do the job.”
