Detectives are investigating a robbery and attempted sexual battery that happened over the weekend at a Hernando County apartment complex.

Deputies were called to the Bridgewater Club Apartment complex in Spring Hill just after 2 a.m. on Saturday for the incident.

According to investigators, a woman who lives in the complex was walking to her apartment when she was attacked.

The woman told deputies that, while she was walking, she was approached by a black man in his early 30s wearing a red shirt. The man started making small talk and spoke with her briefly before she said goodbye and kept walking.

Just moments later, the victim says the suspect ran up behind her and knocked her to the ground. Deputies say he then tried to sexually batter the woman.

The suspect ran away when the victim started screaming. Deputies say he took the woman’s cell phone before he left.

The sheriff’s office is calling the investigation into the incident “active and fluid.” They say more details will be released as they are verified.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Chris Kraft at (352) 754-6830.
