If you’re a SunPass user, pay attention. There’s important information that could affect your next drive on one of our Tampa Bay area toll roads.
System maintenance is underway right now. That means most transactions, like starting a new account or adding money to an account, cannot happen.
They’re convenient, compact and make traveling our toll roads a breeze. SunPass transponders are very popular.
But for the next six days, supposedly ending at 9 a.m. Monday, the backbone of the SunPass system is down for the count.
SunPass user Tom Clancy won’t be losing any sleep.
“I don’t think it will be that bad. If I’ve got money in the bank and they just can’t get to it because their system is down. It will be there when they come back online,” he said.
He’s right. During the maintenance period, you can still use your SunPass transponder. Toll transactions will be held and debited once the system comes back online.
You cannot replenish with cash and “Easy Pay” customers may see multiple credit card charges come Monday morning.
While the system is down, you can’t activate a new transponder or pay an invoice.
You can’t go on the SunPass website, use a transponder for airport parking or use the toll-by-plate website.
The maintenance is supposed to make the system run better.
“That’ll be nice. I mean the app is kind of antiquated anyway, so, if it makes it a little bit easier, that would be nice,” said SunPass user Caitlynd Sweazy.
Why all the hassle?
8 On Your Side found out, this is really a big consolidation of systems across the state.
It’s supposed to enhance SunPass customer service.
