POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Two people were killed Friday morning when a train and van collided in Polk County.
The crash occurred around 3 a.m at Highway 98 west near Western Avenue and U.S. 27 in Frostproof.
According to troopers, 23-year-old Emily Montcrief, 23, of Avon Park was driving a Caravan with 23-year-old Lyndsay Serey of Sebring in tow. A preliminary investigation revealed the Caravan struck a crossing bar before hitting the 27th car of the train, causing the Caravan to overturn and the train to derail. Both Montcrief and Serey died at the scene. The train’s engineer was not injured.
Officials said routine autopsies and blood toxicology reports are being conducted. Investigators suspect impairment may have been a factor in the crash.
