ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – The Tampa Bay Rays announced they have traded shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league pitcher Matt Seelinger.

Hechavarria was designated for assignment one day after the Major League non-waiver trade deadline, after appearing in 61 games this season.

A solid defensive infielder, Hechavarria’s move was no secret with the club’s desire to promote shortstop Willy Adames to the full-time position.

Hechavarria had a stellar .990 fielding percentage in 2018, second best in the American League.

Seelinger is 1-3 with a 3.03 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 28 appearances for Class-A West Virginia.

He joins the Rays organization and will report to Class-A Bowling Green.
