Subtropical Depression 5 has now become Subtropical Storm Ernesto.
Ernesto is the fifth named storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. It is well off the U.S. coast in the northern Atlantic Ocean.
“This storm developed exactly where we like to see them – way out to sea with a track that won’t bother anyone,” said Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Ian Oliver.
As of 5 p.m., Ernesto has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Ernesto is about 650 miles southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland and is moving north at 9 mph.
“A turn toward the north-northeast is expected later today, and a faster northeastward motion is expected by late Thursday and should continue through early Saturday,” the NHC said in its 11 a.m. advisory. “Some additional strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. The system is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone Thursday night or early Friday.”
