TAMPA (WFLA) — Tampa Police Department has released more information on the officer-involved shooting that happened late Tuesday night during a traffic stop.

According to police, back on April 23 around 5:30 p.m., a white Chevy Impala with black wheels and a distinctive front black bumper drove north on N. 53rd Street. People in the car fired several shots at a home on 53rd Street, hitting an adult female inside.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday around 11:30 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on E. Palifox Street on a white Chevy Impala that matched the suspect description.

Police say the driver, later identified as 26-year-old Jonas Joseph, pulled into a driveway area of a home. After putting the Impala into reverse, Joseph hit a police vehicle before trying to flee. The Impala crashed into a tree almost immediately.

Joseph then began to shoot at the officers, according to police. Officers were forced to fire back, hitting and killing Joseph.

Police say a second gun was found in the Impala.

Five police officers, ranging from six to 21 years with TPD, have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
