(WFLA) – Michigan state Sen. Kim LaSata said Tuesday that when a woman gets an abortion, it “should be painful,” Michigan Radio reported.
The Republican was debating a bill that would ban the dilation-and-evacuation procedure for second-trimester pregnancy termination.
“Of course it should be hard, and the procedure should be painful, and you should allow God to take over, and you should deliver that baby, and you should handle the situation,” LaSata said, according to Michigan Radio.
The dilation-and-evacuation procedure, D&E, involves removing the fetus with a combination of suction and instruments and creates the “fewest complications for women compared to alternative procedures,” according to the nonpartisan Guttmacher Institute.
LaSata reportedly made the comments while talking about her attempt years ago to end a pregnancy that resulted in a miscarriage.
The remarks come as a number of states debate stricter abortion laws aimed at overturning Roe v. Wade. On Tuesday, Alabama lawmakers passed what is considered the most restrictive abortion law in the country, which does not have an exception for rape or incest.
Last week, Georgia lawmakers passed a law that effectively bans abortion after six weeks.
Although the Michigan bill cleared both legislative houses, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says she will veto the legislation.
