Clearwater police are ramping up efforts all week to lower the number of tragedies on our roadways.

A study shows that Pinellas County ranks among the top 25 counties in the state for serious or fatal traffic crashes.

“We want to make the streets of Clearwater safer for everyone, whether you’re driving a car, riding a bicycle or walking,” said Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter.

Police want drivers to obey speed limits and to never drive impaired. It’s important for bicyclists to follow traffic laws by riding in the direction of traffic and to use a light at night.

Pedestrians should be sure to cross in crosswalks or at intersections and to make sure they’re visible to drivers when walking after dark.

This safety campaign is made possible by a $50,000 grant and is funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with FDOT.
