St. Pete police say a car that crashed into a tree this morning was stolen.
Investigators say the white, 2016 Mazda Miata was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on 38th Avenue North around 3:32 a.m. The car was approaching 49th Street North when the driver lost control, swerved off the road and hit a tree.
The car burst into flames. When officers arrived, the driver and passenger were burned beyond recognition.
Investigators say the car was stolen hours before the crash.
The identities of the two people inside the car will be released after the medical examiner’s report is completed and next of kin are notified.
