TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Thousands of pint-sized pirates braved the chilly temperatures to attend the annual Gasparilla Children’s Parade on Bayshore Boulevard. The parade kicked off at 3:30 at Bayshore and Bay to Bay and made it’s way towards downtown. More than a hundred floats, marching bands and others participated in this year’s parade.
They lined Bayshore hoping to collect beads and other booty. Some used tried and true methods, others got creative. Blake McGowan used a fishing net to collect his beads. PHOTOS: Children’s Gasparilla Parade 2016
“I got this for my last birthday, so I thought, as soon as I got in my dad’s truck, I got out and said I better bring my net,” Said McGowan. “It’s been working really well. “
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a regular at Gasparilla festivities does not believe the chilly temperatures drove anyone away. “I’ve been all along the parade route and it’s pretty packed. All the little kids are bundled up.” Said Mayor Buckhorn. “Once they start seeing those beads flying, they’re going to be as happy as can be.”

The annual event has been a part of Tampa’s Gasparilla celebration since 1947. It’s an alcohol-free event that draws thousands every year.
