TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – After the city of Flint, Michigan was found to have contaminated drinking water, help has flooded in from all corners of the country, including from right here in Tampa.
Turning an idea into action, one group of friends is preparing to embark on a roughly 1,200-mile journey all the way up to Flint.
They won’t be traveling lightly; several tons of water will also go with them.
When #Tampa2Flint’s founder, Samuel Blair, first heard about the water crisis, he knew it was time to do something.
“Someone needed to step up and if our actions help someone else or inspire someone else to actually take the same initiative and move forward, then I feel like our job is complete,” said Blair.
On Saturday morning, the group held a water drive on the University of Tampa’s campus, collecting hundreds of water bottles. Along with three other men, Blair will hand-deliver the water to Michigan next week- bringing both fresh water and renewed hope to the people of Flint.
#Tampa2Flint has raised just more than $3,100 on a “Go Fund Me” page to cover the cost of delivering all of those donations.
The group will depart from Tampa on Tuesday and so far, they have approximately seven tons of water. They hope to have 12 tons by the time they leave next week.
