My approach to investing is that there is no room for prediction and emotion in the investment process. I believe in a rules based approach where a screening process is used to select investments that match a client’s risk profile and long term objectives. What that means is our portfolios are built more on analysis and less on prediction. Success in our portfolios depends on our ability to be disciplined to a process as opposed to correct on a prediction as to where the markets will go.
Before entering the investment industry I became a licensed Accountant and that experience provided me with a deep fundamental understanding of Financial Statements and how to analyze and identify companies that have a high probability of future success. I use those skills in our approach to building portfolios for our clients. By having a process we can suppress our hard wired instinct to make emotional decisions when we are investing. Emotional investing is one of the leading contributors to poor portfolio performance and no investor is immune to making classic human emotion mistakes.
I am currently in the final stages of completing a book on emotional investing and the title of the book is “RECALCULATING”. I titled the book that way because when we are driving in our cars and we turn down the wrong road our GPS will pop up with a message that states recalculating and it will give us a new recommendation on how to achieve our objective of reaching a destination. I believe that we also need a financial GPS which is a system that tells us what changes we should make to our portfolios when economic events occur. My practice is based on managing such a system for our clients. Please watch for my book release and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have on the dangers of emotional investing.
