When you think of going to work you probably don’t think about working out at the same time. But one company is encouraging its employees to exercise “while” they work and a new study shows it is increasing productivity.

At the Humana offices in Tampa, there are spin bikes and step desks allowing employees to get some cardio while working on their laptops. Humana employee Jennifer Bickel says “it feels good to get activity in on a daily basis and if I can get work done at the same time. Win-Win.”

This is part of Humana’s Vitality program. It also extends beyond the walls of Humana to all of the companies and employees that Humana insures. “Not every organization we work with is ready to bring in the spin bikes or the step desk in the background. So what we do, and what our team really does, is we ask where are you at right now with the health care wellness of your company,” says Humana Manager Logan Pennington.

The results of a new three-year study show the Vitality program has resulted in fewer unscheduled absences, lower health care costs, and improved employee productivity. Humana  employee Tracy Olson says “I’ve always worked out my whole life. I was in track and all that so to be able to work at a company that does this is wonderful. It’s like a dream.”

Humana Vitality encourages employees to get fit and stay active. They can earn financial incentives, HSA contributions and additional paid time off. Humana employee Kayla Hennessy says “it gets me up and moving while I’m working cause as we all know the new saying is sitting is the new smoking. So it helps me concentrate a little more and get my steps in.”

If your medical insurance provider is Humana, you too can be part of the Vitality program. Of  Humana’s 50-thousand employees nationwide, 96% of them participate in one way or another.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
